Margaret Dick has been described as a pioneer of Australian food microbiology. She made her outstanding career from the early s as a microbiologist in Kraft Foods Australia, and rose quickly to become their Chief Microbiologist. In addition, she carried her research and expertise outwards to influence national standards in Australia and to influence education in her field of expertise, and to work with government bodies associated with public health.

Margaret Isabella Brownlee Dick, who died on 25 September eleven days after celebrating her 90th birthday, was a pioneer in the development of food microbiology in Australia and in showing that women could hold their places with men in the sciences and in positions of responsibility. After brief experience in medical microbiology in Adelaide she returned to Melbourne in and joined the microbiology laboratory recently established by the Kraft Walker Cheese Company later Kraft Foods.

Many in the Pacific Jubilee Program will have known and experienced Margaret as their spiritual director or supervisor. Just saying her name evokes many feelings, thoughts and memories for me. Known as Sister Margaret to some or just Margaret to most, she was a spiritual director par excellence…with her ability to see the real you without judgment, to see through the facades, the masks, to get to the kernel of essence…to hold the space in a loving, peaceful manner just by being Margaret.
