Seventeen registered sex offender parolees live at the Inns of California in Salinas, according to Douglas Eckenrod, a parole agent and spokesman for the California Department of Corrections. Salinas Councilman Tony Barrera says he understands that parolees need homes, but he worries about families with children who decide to stay at the motel. When he asked a motel manager whether other guests are informed of the situation before spending the night, he says, the manager told him sex offenders no longer reside there.
Hober said police have investigated complaints surrounding massage parlors throughout Monterey for about six months. On Tuesday, Hober addressed Monterey City Council about the issue and recommended stricter rules and more severe consequences for massage business owners. In two weeks, the city council will get the chance to pass the ordinance.
