Pierre Loti has a lot to answer for. In between Messager and Puccini, though, came this riotous, and in its day daring and improper, parody of the story of the Geisha and the visiting naval officer. A few minutes in, though, and one is swept along — or at least I am — not so much by nostalgia for a vigorous and uninhibited era in the British theatre, but with simple enjoyment for a score bristling with good tunes, performed here with sincerity and panache, and thank goodness, no sense of condescension.
The Geisha, a story of a tea house is an Edwardian musical comedy in two acts. Additional songs were written by Lionel Monckton and James Philp. The original production had the second longest run of any musical up to that time.

The wealthy Lady Constance Wynne Maud Hobson rescues Mimosa from his clutches in the subsequent auction, but the Marquis happily buys lot two instead — the disguised Molly. Such a favourite, indeed, that it won the honour of being the only musical to be granted a full-scale burlesque by the Weber and Fields team. The piece became a vast success in Berlin and, before long, around the whole of Germany.
